When you first start using the essential oils, it can be a little overwhelming! How do I apply? Where do I apply? Can I ingest them? How many drops do I use? .... Stop and take a breath! (preferably over a bottle of Peace & Calming {winky face goes here}). No, but seriously, when you are using your essential oils, follow the basic guide lines and trust your gut. You will learn more tricks and techniques as you start using them more. Follow and look through my blog where I will be posted new stuff all the time!

How to inhale and diffuse essential oils

In this blog, I will only be referring to Young Living essential oils. I cannot attest to any other brand of essential oils. Do NOT ingest any essential oil that is not Young Living brand. Essential oils, without question, are the most powerful thing we have today in both maintaining and rejuvenating our health. Essential oils have been used for thousands of years for their health, cosmetic, and emotionally uplifting properties. Young Living has always been at the forefront of bringing this ancient tradition to modern users, introducing millions to a total mind/body wellness they may never have dreamed possible. Primarily extracted through careful steam distillation, but also through cold pressing, the purest essential oils are far more powerful and effective than dry herbs, delivering quick and effective results. Any time you hold a bottle of our powerful essential oils, you are holding the pure essence of health-promoting botanicals that can be diffused, inhaled, applied topically, incorporated into massage, or taken internally. I am not a doctor and cannot prescribe or diagnose medical conditions. Inform your doctor if you are using essential oils and never stop taking your prescribed medicine, unless advised by your doctor. If you are pregnant or nursing please consult your doctor as well and follow any warning labels. I am not a doctor, I am only here to share my research and personal experience with essential oils. This Essential Oils Pocket Reference guide and this Reference Guide for Essential Oils are good reference guides to have for how to use and information on the oils. The three main ways to use your essential oils are to inhale/diffuse, applying topically or ingest.

How to inhale and diffuse essential oils
apply topically

To inhale the oils, simply open up the bottle and take a sniff! When we inhale through the nose, airborne molecules interact with the olfactory organs and, almost immediately, the brain. Molecules inhaled through the nose or mouth are also carried to the lungs and interact with the respiratory system. Thus, inhaled essential oils can affect the body through several systems and pathways.

Rub 1-3 drops in your hands. Cup your hands around you nose & mouth and breath deeply.

Diffusing your oils in your diffuser is the easiest way to use (and inhale) your essential oils. Young Living sells a few different types of diffusers, and two of those models are available to choose from for FREE in your premium starter kit. Use a diffuser to disperse the essential oils throughout your whole room. Your room will not only smell great, but you will be reaping the benefits from the healing oils being diffused. We personally have one in just about every room of the house. You can even purchase niffy little plug in ones for your office. A quick tip: if you are traveling, add a few drops of essential oils on a cotton ball and place in your car air vent or hotel air vent. Not a bad idea to spray your bed down with purification or such as well.

For a relaxing bath, mix a few drops of essential oil with some epsom salt then add to your bath. The warm water will cause steam to carry the healing oils.

How to apply topically essential oils
apply topically

Young Living essential oils can be used by mixing a few drops of essential oils with a carrier oil such as coconut, olive or grapeseed oil and then applied to the body. Check out your labels or reference guide for the dilution ratio. For instance, Thieves is 1:4 ratio. This means mix 1 drop of Thieves with 4 drops of carrier oil. This is not an exact science, so don't stress over EXACT numbers. Just use that as a guide. In general 1-4 drops of essential oil will do the trick.

Massage on painful areas of the body for relief.

Apply ‘neat’ (undiluted) to the bottoms of the feet. Some oils are very mild (like Lavender) and can be applied neat to most parts of the body. {Examples: Lavender on a minor cut or Copaiba directly onto gums of a teething baby.}

Place a drop on wounds, cuts, lumps, bruises, blemishes, etc.

Check out this blog and my Facebook page for tons of recipes for how to make creams, sprays, etc with your essential oils.

How to ingest essential oils
apply topically

Not all Young Living oils can be ingested. Refer to the essential oil bottle or your reference guide to see if it can be ingested and how much to ingest. A quick way to tell if a Young Living oil is ingestible, is the look on the label. If it has "peel here" at the corner, you can peel the label open and see the nutritional facts.

There are a few different ways to ingest the oils. One way (and my personal favorite) is to add your oil to a glass of water or tea. Any of the citrus oils {like lemon or grapefruit} are great to add to your daily water bottle. Just make sure whenever ingesting essential oils that you use a GLASS bottle. My favorite glass bottle is the Lifefactory glass bottle with flip top cap. Oils will break down the toxins in plastic bottles, and we don't want any of that!!

Another way to ingest the essential oils is to add to a Vegetable Capsule. You can simply drop a few drops of the oil into the capsule and then fill with a carrier oil (such as olive oil) and then close the capsule. Using a glass bottle with dropper will help you add the drops of carrier oil.

Drops of essential oil can be placed under tongue, on the roof of the mouth, and sprayed or swabbed on the throat.

Lastly you can cook with essential oils for a cheap way to get BIG flavor! Think Italian pasta sauce with oregano, thyme and basil.... or peppermint essential oil in chocolate... a margarita with lime essential oil... yummy! Young Living even carries a line of cookbooks to help with ideas.
